Sugar Coated Vetkoek Donuts

Updated: Jul 31

Baker's Dream Sugar Coated Vetkoek Donut recipe

Your traditional vetkoek recipe, now slightly smaller and coated in sugar.

Ingredients:

  • 500g Bakers Dream Cake Flour

  • 4 Tbsp (30 grams) sugar

  • 2 tsp instant yeast

  • ½ tsp salt, optional

  • 500mp warm water

  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil, plus more for deep-frying

  • Jam or sugar, for rolling, optional

Method:

1. Mix the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt together.

2. Add the warm water and vegetable oil and begin to mix into a soft dough.

3. Once the dough has been mixed very well, cover with a tea towel and set aside to rise for an hour.

4. After an hour, the dough should have doubled in size. Mix the dough again. After mixing, allow the dough to rest for another 10 minutes.

5. Heat up enough vegetable oil in a pot for deep-frying over medium heat.

6. Scoop out some batter with a large spoon and drop it into the hot oil. Use a second spoon to push the dough into the hot oil. Ensure the oil is being heated under a medium heat to prevent the donuts from browning too quickly without fully cooking on the inside. Fry the doughnuts until golden brown, turning halfway to ensure even browning.

7. Once ready, scoop the donuts out of the pot and place them onto absorbent paper towels to drain the excess oil.

8. Roll the donuts in a bowl of granulated sugar, ensuring each one is coated thoroughly.

Enjoy!
